There's been so much love for one global chip stock that as many as 14 analysts upgraded it in the past two weeks. Based on a CNBC Pro FactSet screen, 14 analysts upgraded the stock in the past two weeks, and none downgraded it. Those covering the stock say they are optimistic in light of AI demand, among other factors. This "inefficiency" has been estimated to likely create an additional ~10% in equipment demand over time," Kim added. When it comes to AI, Kim also said that each large language model upgrade cycle requires roughly 100 times more in compute capacity upgrades.

A fourth person said some of the companies were notified on Tuesday that their licenses were revoked effective immediately. The U.S. Commerce Department earlier in the day confirmed it had revoked some licenses but stopped short of naming the companies. “We have revoked certain licenses for exports to Huawei,” the Commerce Department said in a statement, declining to specify which ones it had withdrawn. The move could hurt Huawei, which still relies on Intel chips to power its laptops, and could hurt US suppliers that do business with the company. In a regulatory filing earlier this month, Qualcomm said it did not expect to receive more chip revenue from Huawei beyond this year.

Billionaire investor Stanley Druckenmiller revealed Tuesday that he has slashed his big bet in chipmaker Nvidia earlier this year, saying the swift artificial intelligence boom could be overdone in the short run. "We did cut that and a lot of other positions in late March. "I'm not Warren Buffett; I don't own things for 10 or 20 years. I wish I was Warren Buffett," he added. AMD reported first-quarter earnings and sales on Tuesday that were slightly ahead of Wall Street expectations, and provided an in-line forecast for the current quarter. AMD said its closely-watched Data Center segment grew 80% on a year-over-year basis to $2.3 billion thanks to sales of its MI300 AI chip, which competes with Nvidia's AI graphics processors. AMD said it had sold over $1 billion of the AI chips since it launched in the fourth quarter of 2023. AMD also makes central processors which are often paired with advanced AI chips in servers. AMD reported $1.4 billion in first-quarter sales, a 85% annual increase, suggesting that last year's PC slump is over.

Shares of Advanced Micro Devices and Intel dipped on Friday after The Wall Street Journal reported that China is ordering the country's largest telecommunications carriers to cease use of foreign chips. Chinese officials issued the directive earlier this year for the telecom systems to replace non-Chinese core processors by 2027, the Journal reported, citing people familiar with the matter. The report said the mandate would impact AMD and Intel. China set new guidelines in December to remove U.S. chips from government computers and servers, blocking processors from AMD and Intel, the Financial Times reported last month. Intel has reportedly survived a push by AMD to end its sale of hundreds of millions of dollars' worth of laptop chips to the U.S.-sanctioned Chinese telecom company Huawei.
